Cursor is the most significant productivity tool I have used in a decade of software development, and that is not hyperbole. The combination of a mature VS Code foundation with genuinely intelligent codebase understanding creates something qualitatively different from AI autocomplete tools like Copilot.

The core differentiator is codebase indexing. When you open a project in Cursor, it indexes the entire repository — not just the files you have open, but the complete dependency tree, import structure, and cross-file relationships. When you ask a question or make a request, Cursor draws on that full context. The practical result: suggestions that fit your actual codebase rather than generic patterns that require manual adaptation.

Composer mode (Cmd+I) deserves particular attention. Describe a feature in natural language — 'Add JWT authentication to the Express routes, create the middleware, update the user model, and add the relevant tests' — and Cursor generates and applies changes across all relevant files simultaneously. For complex, multi-file features, this workflow reduces implementation time dramatically. In our testing across three real-world projects, Composer-assisted development was approximately 3x faster for feature work that touched more than two files.

Codebase Chat (Cmd+L) answers questions about your own code with specific, linked references. 'Where is the payment processing logic?' and 'How does the authentication flow work?' produce answers with file paths and line numbers, not generic descriptions. For developers new to a codebase — or returning to one after months away — this alone is worth the subscription.

The .cursorrules file solves a persistent problem with AI coding tools: enforcing project conventions. Define your naming conventions, architectural patterns, preferred libraries, and code style once, and every Cursor suggestion respects those rules. No more accepting a suggestion and then reformatting it to match your team's standards.

The free plan is genuinely usable: 2,000 completions and 50 premium requests per month. The Pro plan at $20/month removes limits and provides access to frontier models including Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4o. For any developer billing professionally, the productivity math makes Pro a straightforward decision — the time savings far exceed the cost within the first few working days.

Limitations: Cursor requires a learning period to get the most from Composer mode. The automatic context selection is good but not perfect — complex requests sometimes need manual context additions. And privacy-sensitive codebases should enable Privacy Mode (which prevents code from being stored on Cursor's servers) before first use.
