Perplexity AI has genuinely changed how I do research, and I do not say that about tools casually. The synthesized answer with numbered citations means you get the information immediately, with the option to verify via the linked sources. In practice, I now use Perplexity for roughly 70% of research queries that previously went to Google.

The Pro Search mode (available on the $20/month Pro plan) takes a more investigative approach. It asks clarifying questions before answering, queries multiple sources in depth, and produces substantially longer, more thorough responses. For competitive research, due diligence, or any question requiring synthesis across many sources, Pro Search delivers research-assistant quality output.

The focus feature — limiting search to specific domains like academic papers (Scholar mode), YouTube, Reddit, or your own uploaded files — adds precision that general search lacks. For academic research in particular, the Scholar mode surfaces relevant papers that traditional Google Scholar searches often bury.

Source quality is an important consideration. Perplexity's synthesis is only as reliable as its sources, and for niche or very recent topics, it may surface lower-quality web content. The cited format is the safeguard here — you can always verify the underlying sources, and Perplexity makes this easy with clearly numbered citations linked to original pages.

The free tier is more useful than most: unlimited basic searches with five Pro searches per day. For casual research, this is sufficient. Power users — knowledge workers, researchers, analysts — will find the Pro plan ($20/month) worthwhile for the Pro Search mode and higher usage limits.

Where Google still wins: hyperlocal searches, very recent breaking news, visual search, and maps. Perplexity is not a Google replacement for everything — it is a better tool for research-type queries, which for many users is the majority of what they search for.
